Brougham Castle

In a picturesque setting beside the crossing of the River Eamont and about a mile from Brougham Hall, Brougham Castle was founded in the early 13th century. This great keep largely survives, amid many later buildings – including the unusual double gatehouse and impressive ‘Tower of League’.

Carlisle Castle

Standing strongly in the city it has dominated for nine centuries, Carlisle Castle was a constantly updated working fortress until well within living memory. Now its rich and varied visitor attractions reflect its long and eventful history. Even before the mediaeval castle was begun, this site was an important Roman fortress.

Lowther Castle and park

In a quiet corner of Cumbria about two miles from Brougham Hall, the Lowther estate has been the home of the Lowther family since the 12th century. You can drive through the park in front of the Castle and visit St Michael’s Church.

Rheged

St Michael’s Church

This church stands within an extensive Churchyard within Lowther park and in the shadow of the ruined Lowther Castle. A spectacular location which overlooks the River Lowther with views over forest and fell.

Penrith town centre

Penrith is a large market town, just two miles from Brougham Hall, acting as a regional centre for the eastern Lake District, lying just outside the National Park.

Dalemain Historic House and Gardens

Dalemain, a beautiful historic mansion house, is just a few miles from Penrith and Brougham Hall near Ullswater.

Mayburgh Henge

Mayburgh is a large and impressive Neolithic henge. Its banks stand up to three metres high, constructed of pebbles collected from the nearby river.
